• Educational Program

    Our educational program emphasizes and maintains high expectations academically while developing our students spriritually, intellectually, morally, physically, and socially.  

    The curriculum of Mary Help of Christians Catholic School for all grades has been designed to follow the recommendations of the Archdiocese of Miami and meets and /or exceeds the expectations set forth in the Florida Standards. The curriculum includes the major subject areas of Religion, Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies. Teachers utilize Google Apps for Education, textbooks and a wide variety of instructional materials to teach students according to Archdiocesan standards. Textbooks are reviewed and adopted on a need basis. Teacher input is sought during the adoption process and the most current, comprehensive, and educationally appropriate texts are selected.


    Students’ moral and spiritual development is enhanced daily by the school’s atmosphere of prayer and Catholic faith. Religion is taught each day, and students attend weekly Mass as a school community. In addition to the classroom experience, religious education extends to liturgical experiences in all grade levels, daily prayer, and class retreats for students in Grades 2-8.


    Mathematics instruction includes practice in operations, problem-solving, and critical thinking. Students begin their mathematics learning using concrete objects in the primary grades and then move toward abstract learning. The learning of math facts is emphasized across the grade levels. Technology is utilized to promote fact learning, skill acquisition, and problem-solving. Classroom computers and lab computers complement mathematics instruction. Teachers use a variety of instructional methods such as whole and small group instruction, partner work, and individualized instruction. Classrooms are well equipped with necessary manipulative, teacher resources, and technology to augment the mathematics educational  program.


    Science lessons provide students with additional opportunities for hands-on learning. Through the use of texts and ancillary materials, students learn about physical, natural, and earth sciences. Students ask questions, perform experiments, discover, and progress through the scientific process as young scientists. In the primary grades, students experience Science as they grow plants, hatch butterflies, and study recycling. In the Junior High, students dissect frogs and worms, balance chemical equations, and grow their own vegetables in our Edible Gardening course. The school is also equipped with two fully functioning state-of-the-art science labs to enhance student learning.

    Social Studies

    Social Studies learning invites students to connect with the world around them while honoring the past. Students begin their social studies experience by learning about their family. The learning then expands to the community, their state, country, and ancient cultures. Students study geography in all grade levels with a strong geographic emphasis in seventh grade. The Middle School Social Studies curriculum incorporates a variety of activities to teach appropriate skills including cooperation, communication, organization, critical and creative thinking. Course content includes but is not limited to: World Geography, Ancient and Medieval History, and United States History.


    The intent of the Media program is to teach students skills that build upon each other, from kindergarten through grade four, resulting in their ability to identify different forms of literature for their pleasure or use; gather information from books, using parts of the book such as the index, table of contents, glossary, or bibliography; and be comfortable using online resources. Highlights of the school year for the Media Center include the Fall and Spring Scholastic Book Fair, Barnes & Noble Book Fairs, and monthly exhibits to highlight current events. Awards and incentive programs are provided to students who reach the one million word count and other reading benchmarks. Time for reading is incorporated in all grade levels and occurs beyond the normally allotted time for language arts instruction.


    Technology instruction is integrated across the curriculum at Mary Help of Christians Catholic School. Students in grades K-5 work with technology in every classroom! Students in grades 5-8 are required to utilize a Chromebook as one of their primary learning tools. Middle school students are instructed in technology as part of the elective wheel curriculum. In addition to hands-on applications, teachers frequently utilize online resources and electronic visuals to improve daily lessons.


    Music, Art, Physical Education, and Foreign Language are special area classes offered at Mary Help of Christians. The Performing Arts program affords the students opportunities to sing, read, write, act and perform. As a school community, singing at Mass unites us in song as we celebrate our faith. The annual Christmas Show held at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts, showcases all MHOC students and our annual Spring Night of the Arts is an enriching experience for our young artists and performers. The Visual Arts program aims to stimulate students’ creative energies and open their minds to the world of graphic expression. By fusing studio work with liberal portions of historical background, students will recognize important artists and their products. Students develop a basic understanding of art processes as well as an ability to evaluate and enjoy variety in art. Physical education activities are designed with the physical, emotional, and social development of the child. Spanish classes expose children to the language with an emphasis on speaking throughout grades K-8. In the primary grades, students work on their vocabulary and basic expressions for greeting and instruction, colors, shapes, numbers, etc. Although conversation is the main objective in Spanish classes at the intermediate level, students also work on basic grammar and writing. Students in grades 6-8 choose elective courses within these areas. In-depth classes covering organizational skills, research and resources, drama, choir, robotics, computer programming, personal health and fitness, literary magazine, analysis of novels, and visual arts are offered as electives.
